Breaking Up: Love and Location for Digital Natives
Throughout my college career participating in the experiential learning program, I have packed up my life and moved somewhere new or back to Cincinnati every four months. It has been a great adventure, but it is also really hard to leave everything that is familiar to you and the people you love. Friendships become hard to maintain, and especially romantic relationships. Long distance is a hard way to sustain relationships, and even with all the technology available for communication, things still fall apart – they break up. Growing up as a digital native has made my experiences with love and friendship different than any generation before me, and I want to explore and express these through creative expression. I also love bringing people together through encouraging and facilitating creativity and emotional exploration.
In a world where digital communication continues to become more prevalent than ever, heightened by echo chambers and political dissent, I believe it is important to understand interpersonal relationships by fostering emotional intelligence and empathy. Creating shared works of art on personal matters is something I am passionate about. It is also incredibly important to me to have non-school related creative outlets. I want to become a leader and active participant in my community’s discussions on self-understanding, care, and respect.
I created a collaborative zine (small, self published magazine) composed of poetry, photos, art, short stories, etc. with ~40 peer contributors, and a collection of poetry from participating in April’s National Poetry Month. I also held a zine release event to share the work, with “open mic” style poetry readings and music performances.
