First Experience: Music & Architecture Seminar
Fall semester of 2013, I took an Honors seminar called Music and Architecture: Correlation and Comparison (Honors Scholars Course, 16-FAM-397H, sec. 001), led by Terence Milligan, DMA. The class met on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 and was open to honors students. During the class, we examined the similarities and differences of important architectural and musical pieces, especially in various time periods. The outcome was a greater understanding and appreciation of the interactions between sound and space.
I chose to take this class because I have also been very interested in architecture (strongly considered pursuing a career in architecture) and I am so involved in music (I play five instruments and have been playing since I was five!) I thought this would be an intriguing class and I was right! I learned about a lot of music I had never heard of before, and we also had the opportunity to tour every building on the University of Cincinnati campus. We also went to see a Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert for free; it was amazing! This experience was meaningful because it taught me to look for details and connections in things I would otherwise find unrelated. I think analyzing the differences and different impacts of various art forms will help me think critically during my future in design. During the class, I was able to apply prior knowledge I had of classical music and music theory to some of the new knowledge of architecture presented by the course. |
Artifact: Here are some drawings I did at the time of the course of interiors of buildings on the UC campus: this is to represent the architecture portion of the course. Also there is a song I recorded and a music video I made during my first year: this is to represent the music portion of the course.
